Making videos
Write a script in five minutes
Use four beats: hook, problem, solution, and call to action. Write it the way you talk, keep it under 120 words for a 30 to 45 second video, and rehearse it once before filming.
The four beats
Every short script needs only these.
- Hook: one line that gives a reason to keep watching
- Problem: the frustration your viewer recognises
- Solution: what you did, shown rather than described
- Call to action: what the viewer should do next
An example
Hook: I stopped filling out the same application 40 times. Problem: Every job wanted the same details typed into a different form, and I was spending my evenings on it. Solution: Now I set my preferences once and the applications keep going while I prep for interviews. Call to action: If you're applying right now, try it this week.
Sound natural
Write in short sentences and read it aloud before you film. Use bullet points instead of a word-for-word script if you sound stiff, and keep the take where you sound most like yourself.
