Making videos
Hooks that stop the scroll
A hook is the first one to three seconds of your video. It should promise something specific, like a result, a surprise, or a relatable problem, so the viewer wants to see what happens next.
Why hooks matter
Short-video feeds move fast. If the opening does not give a reason to stay, people swipe before your best part. Strong hooks are the single biggest lever on views.
Hook formats that work
Most good hooks fit one of these patterns.
- The relatable problem: name a frustration your viewer has right now
- The result first: show the outcome, then explain how
- The bold claim: say something specific and back it up
- The question: ask what the viewer is already wondering
- The mistake: point out a common error and the fix
- The story: start in the middle of a moment

Make the hook visual too
Pair the spoken line with movement or on-screen text in the first frame. Start mid-action rather than with a greeting, and cut any pause before the first word.
