When to Follow Up After Applying for a Job

Follow-up can help when there is a real person to contact, but it does not replace a relevant application. Respect any timeline or no-contact instruction the employer provides.

Check the employer's timeline

If the posting or confirmation names a review date, wait until after it. Otherwise, roughly one to two weeks is a reasonable point to consider one polite follow-up, particularly if you have a recruiting contact.

Keep the message specific

Include the job title, when you applied, and a sentence about relevant experience or interest. Ask whether the team needs anything else. Keep it short and avoid sending repeated messages when there is no reply.

Continue your search

An application can stay under review for many reasons. Record your follow-up, then keep working on other openings. A silent employer is not a reliable signal about your qualifications.
