How to Write a Cover Letter for a Job

A cover letter is most useful when it connects an employer's need to experience that is hard to see from your resume alone. If the form does not request one, judge whether it adds anything specific.

Open with the match

Name the role and the reason your experience fits its main work. Avoid a generic statement that could be sent to any employer.

Prove one or two points

Choose brief examples of relevant work, scope, and results you can defend. Explain a career change or unusual background when that context helps. Do not invent familiarity with the company's people or projects.

Close simply

Say what you would contribute and invite a conversation. Keep the letter easy to scan, check the employer and role names, and save the version submitted with the application.
