What is an applicant tracking system (ATS)?
An applicant tracking system is software an employer uses to collect applications and organize hiring work. It can store your resume, application answers, notes, and status changes so recruiters can review candidates for a role.
What to keep in mind
- An ATS is not one universal resume-scoring machine. Employers configure their own questions and review process, and a human may still read your application.
- A parser may extract your contact details and work history into form fields. Check the extracted values before you submit; formatting can affect how they appear.
- If a form asks you to re-enter details already in your resume, complete the required fields accurately. An uploaded file alone may not fill them.
What you can do
- Use clear section headings and a simple reading order in your resume.
- Describe relevant work with the language you can truthfully support from your experience.
- Preview your uploaded file and review every parsed field before submitting.
