How to Network During a Job Search

Networking is easier to sustain when the first request is a conversation or a specific question. A contact may help you understand a team even when they cannot refer you.

Start with a focused reason to connect

Choose a role, company, or type of work you want to learn about. Contact people whose work you know or whose experience relates to that target. Mention the connection and ask one question they are well placed to answer, rather than sending the same broad request to everyone.

Make the request small

Ask whether they have time for a brief exchange, or send the question in the message so they can answer asynchronously. Respect a decline or silence. If a conversation happens, listen for useful context about the work and application process instead of turning it into an unrequested pitch.

Follow through and keep records

Thank the person, complete anything you promised, and record practical details separately from your application tracker. If you later ask for a referral, name the current role and give them a clear chance to decline. Continue applying through the employer's required channel.
