How to Ask for a Job Referral
A referral request works best when it is grounded in a real relationship and a particular open role. The person you ask may know the work or hiring team, but they do not owe you an introduction.
Choose the right person and role
Start with someone who knows you or your work. Read the current posting and confirm that you meet the main requirements before asking them to spend time on it.
Send a short request
Name the role and link to the posting. Briefly explain why your background fits and why you thought of this person. Ask whether they would be comfortable referring you or sharing advice, and make it clear that either answer is fine.
Follow through graciously
If they agree, send the resume version and details they request. Do not claim a referral before one exists or pressure them for updates. Thank them, keep your own application record, and continue your search.
