How to Handle a Take-Home Interview Assignment
A take-home task can show how you approach the role's work, but its expectations should be clear enough that you can decide whether to invest the time.
Clarify the brief before starting
Confirm the deadline, expected format, evaluation criteria, allowed tools, and where to ask questions. If the requested work appears much larger than the stated time, ask which parts matter most. Decide whether the scope is reasonable for your search.
Make assumptions visible
Work within the brief and record any assumptions that materially change your answer. Show your reasoning and tradeoffs, especially where there is no single correct result. Check that submitted files open and do not contain another employer's private information.
Prepare to discuss the work
Keep a copy of what you submitted. Be ready to explain why you chose that approach, what you would improve with more time, and which parts were your own work. If the employer asks for use of your work beyond evaluation, clarify terms before agreeing.
