This is a fictional illustration, not a real applicant's letter. Replace every placeholder and claim with facts you can support. Check the employer's application instructions before sending a cover letter.
Sample letter
Dear hiring team,
Your posting for a software engineer describes [specific product or system from the posting]. I have spent the last [time period] building [relevant type of system] at [Previous Company], and I would like to do that work on your team.
At [Previous Company], I worked on [specific feature or service]. I chose [technical approach] to address [constraint], tested it with [method], and saw [result you can verify]. That work also required me to coordinate with [partner team] so the change could reach users safely.
I would be glad to talk about how I would approach [specific engineering priority]. Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely,
[Your name]
Make it yours
- Name one system or user problem from the posting, not just the company's technology stack.
- Explain your own contribution and a decision you made; replace the result with one you can support.
- If the role is infrastructure, mobile, or data focused, choose evidence from that kind of work.
Leave out: Avoid claiming ownership of a whole team's release or listing every programming language you have used.
