When can you start?

Give an honest start-date range and note any real notice or scheduling constraint.

The sample below is fictional. Replace its placeholders and claims with facts you can support; do not paste it unchanged into an application.

What the question asks

Employers may phrase it as: When would you be available to start?

Use a date or range you can realistically meet. Account for notice you intend to give and any known commitments. If you need to confirm a detail, say so instead of promising an impossible date.

Example answer

I could start on or after [date]. That allows me to [give the notice I plan to give / finish a current commitment]. If a different timeline would help your team, I would be glad to discuss what is possible.

Why this structure works: It gives the employer useful planning information while leaving room for a conversation about timing.

Make it your own

  • Choose a date you can actually honor.
  • State a notice period only if it applies to your situation.
  • If availability varies by shift or location, answer that part of the posting directly.

Avoid: Avoid writing 'immediately' if you already know you cannot begin right away.
