How do you explain an employment gap?
Describe a gap briefly and truthfully, then show your readiness for the work ahead.
The sample below is fictional. Replace its placeholders and claims with facts you can support; do not paste it unchanged into an application.
What the question asks
Employers may phrase it as: Can you explain the gap in your work history?
State the gap in broad, accurate terms if you choose to answer. Share only the detail needed to address the question, then return to relevant skills and availability. You do not need to invent work or disclose medical or family details in a sample answer.
Example answer
I stepped away from full-time work during [period] for [brief truthful reason you are comfortable sharing]. Since then, I have [relevant work, learning, or preparation that actually happened]. I am ready to contribute to [responsibility in this role] and can discuss the experience that best matches it.
Why this structure works: It answers the timeline question while keeping the focus on qualifications and what you can do now.
Make it your own
- Use only the level of detail you are comfortable sharing and that is accurate.
- If you did not train or freelance during the gap, remove that sentence rather than inventing activity.
- Return to a relevant example from before or after the gap.
Avoid: Avoid fabricated jobs, dates, courses, or explanations. Do not feel obliged to include private health or caregiving details in a public template.
