About software engineer roles

Software engineering postings can emphasize product features, infrastructure, or a particular part of the stack. Read the responsibilities before deciding whether a familiar title fits your experience.

Check the languages, systems, ownership level, and work examples the team asks for; a shared title does not mean every engineering role uses the same stack.

Skills to show

  • Programming
  • System design
  • Testing
  • Debugging

Back them with a system you built, the tradeoff you made, and a measured reliability or user outcome. More on software engineer skills

Interview questions to practice

  1. How did you investigate a difficult production defect?
  2. What tradeoff did you make in a recent system design?
  3. How did you verify that a change was safe to release?
